Learning letter sounds!
We have been working hard at learning our letters and what each letter says. This lesson focuses on letter identification and phonemic knowledge (being able to tell what the letter is and what it "says"). We practice every day in class and here you can practice further. Since there are 26 letters in the alphabet, it will take some time to get through each letter to learn and review.
Parents: The "I Can" statements your child is working on are:
For example: When asked shown a flash card of B (or b) students can say "B". And when asked what does the letter say they say /b/, not "buh" for example. This is a great way to practice after your child has worked on letters on Starfall. Take a moment to quiz them. Then go back and review the ones that they struggled with.
This phonemic awareness is the foundation upon which we build our reading skills in kindergarten! It is very important to master our letters and letter sounds so that we can grow as fluent readers.
I suggest going through 4-6 letters a day. If your child has mastered being able to identify the letter and the sound it makes, challenge them by helping you create a list of words that have the beginning sound of a chosen letter.
For example if you pick Rr: robot, run, rainbow, rose, rhinoceros, robe, red.
Is your student still wowing you? Try coming up with words that END with a given letter. This is much harder. For example if you pick Tt: bent, hit, bat, foot, hut, mat, etc.
Have fun and Good luck!

Extension
If your child has mastered their letter and letter sounds they can move on to the "Learn to Read" section on Starfall.com. Here they will begin to learn about word families and blending. Remember, this is an extension. Students are not expect to be at this point until late spring of Kindergarten. However, some are early bloomers and we want to keep them challenged and growing!
